A Film and Orchestra Collaboration

with

The School of Film and Media Studies

Prof. Joel Neville Anderson

The Purchase Symphony Orchestra

Prof. Mina Kim, Director

This event is the culmination of the weekly School of Film and Media Studies 2023-24 Screening Series. “Glassworks Sonic Visions” is the result of a year of collaboration between the Purchase Symphony Orchestra and Experimental Workshop filmmakers. Crafting visuals in response to Glassworks (1982) composed by Philip Glass, the filmmakers have produced a series of short pieces as accompaniment to the orchestra’s performance. They have also produced visual interludes between Glass’s original movements for musicians to respond to with improvisation as well as a new selection of eclectic musical arrangements chosen in response to the images, a dynamic volley of picture and sound that will produce something entirely new witnessed for the first and last time by tonight’s audience.

The project arose during a West 2 parking lot conversation between Conservatory of Music Director Jenny Undercofler and Film Chair John Young on experimental music, and developed by Professors Mina Kim and Joel Neville Anderson. The Sonic Visions initiative is crafted to offer students a rare chance to delve into a rich tradition of avant-garde art intertwining film and music carried on from the “silent” era of early cinema, producing innovative moving images to accompany a live musical performance. This project champions the fusion of diverse musical elements and cinematic concepts, traditions, and groundbreaking innovations, creating a nurturing space where students can explore and manifest their unique visions without constraints. Our aim is to transcend the traditional boundaries of music and film genres, encouraging students to venture beyond conventional frameworks. This paves the way for the emergence of novel and distinctive forms of musical and cinematic expression. We invite you to embark on this exciting journey with us, as we strive to transform the realms of music and film as we know them.

Performer Profiles

Mina Kim

Assistant Professor Mina Kim Mina Kim is a celebrated Director of the Purchase Symphony Orchestra (PSO), radiates a magnetic energy, hailed as a “spirited conductor” by Brooklyn Discovery. New accolades decorate her already notable journey, with Ms. Kim recently being appointed the Music Director of the Woodstock Symphony Orchestra. As a distinguished guest conductor, her baton has found resonance across a spectrum of ensembles including Westchester Chamber Soloists, Chappaqua Symphony Orchestra, and the WSCMA Area All-State Symphony Orchestra.

The upcoming 2023-2024 season promises a dynamic repertoire under her guidance, encompassing symphonic, operatic, and contemporary masterpieces. A key highlight will be the fusion of the Purchase Soul Voices with the PSO in a moving celebration of Black History Month. Furthermore, in an innovative cross-genre endeavor, she and the PSO will synergize with the School of Film and Media Studies at Purchase College to sculpt a novel exhibition, adorned with the ethereal compositions of Philip Glass. Her career pinnacle moments comprise collaborations with virtuosos like Joshua Bell on Thomas de Hartmann’s Violin Concerto and the GRAMMY-nominated artist, Black Violin.

Beyond the conductor’s podium, Ms. Kim is an active concert pianist, vocal coach, and chamber musician. Her keyboard has echoed in concert halls worldwide, from the Kennedy Center to Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. Renowned music festivals like the Vienna Music Seminar in Austria and Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival in Maine have been graced by her artistry, as have international opera programs in Europe.

Rooted in a solid academic foundation, Ms. Kim possesses a B.M, M.M., and Artist Diploma in Piano Performance from Busan National University and Purchase College. She has also been conferred with the Professional Studies Diploma in Vocal Collaborative Piano from the Mannes School of Music, where she shone as the recipient of the Newton Swift Award. Her academic sojourn at Mannes deepened with orchestral conducting studies supported by the President’s Scholarship Award. During her tenure there, she served as Assistant Conductor of the Mannes American Contemporary Ensemble (MACE) and Chorus Master of The Mannes Opera.

Since 2006, the Conservatory of Music at SUNY Purchase College has been home. Currently at the helm as Chair of Classical Studies, she continues to illuminate young minds, acting not just as a professor, but a cherished mentor, guiding students through the mosaic world of music.
