Race, Ethnicity and Nationality
While we are traveling abroad, we will be faced with questions from people in our new community.
Some questions may be about issues that are present in the U.S., even if they do not directly apply to you. They can also be based off of American stereotypes that locals have been exposed to. In addition, you may experience locals who have preconceived notions about you due to your physical appearance, being an English speaker or having a foreign accent when speaking the local language. There may be some instances where the behaviors or the questions asked of the locals make you uncomfortable. Something that can be helpful when navigating these situations is to be aware of the current and historical relations between the U.S. and your host country. This can help provide context for some of the opinions and perspectives you may encounter.
Some questions to consider and discuss with OGE when making your study abroad decision:
1) What are the perceptions and stereotypes about your nationality, race or ethnicity in the host country?
2) Are there racial or ethnic tensions in the host country? What is the source of the tension?
3) How might your nationality, racial or ethnic identity affect your study abroad experience?
