Gender and Sexual Orientation

As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, there are some considerations that should be made when deciding where you will study abroad.

Do your best to learn the laws and customs of the country you are considering, as there are still several countries where same-sex relationships are a crime.

Some questions to consider and discuss with the OGE when making this decision:

1)  What are the cultural norms for dating and friendship in the country I am considering to study abroad in?

2)  How will I be perceived by the host country/city because of my sexuality/identity?

3)  Is it safe for me to be honest about my sexuality while in the abroad country/city?

4)  Who can I talk to if I do experience discrimination while studying abroad?

5)  What resources are available for the LGBTQIA+ community in this country?

6)  Is there an LGBTQIA+ community/neighborhood that is accessible in the city where the program is located?
