New Staff Member Spotlight: Deborah Gwoliloita
Get to know our new International Student Coordinator and DSO!
Where are you from originally?
I’m originally from Kampala, Uganda in East Africa.
What brought you to Purchase or inspired you to work here?
I was drawn to Purchase by its vibrant, diverse community and the opportunity to connect with people from different cultures. I’m passionate about supporting people, and I saw this as a great way to combine my interpersonal skills with meaningful work that makes a difference in students’ lives.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy exploring new places and learning about different cultures. I also love discovering new foods.
Do you have any hobbies, creative pursuits, or sports you’re passionate about?
Yes! I run my own business in Uganda, Kandi’s Glam House, where I import and sell beauty and personal care products. I’m also interested in singing especially classic hymns and opera pieces.
If a student wanted to get to know you better, what’s a great conversation starter?
Ask me about Uganda — I’ll happily tell you about my country, its culture, food, and beautiful landscapes and we might lose track of time talking!
What’s your role, and how will you support international students? What are you most looking forward to in your work with international students?
My role is to help international students feel welcome, supported, and understood as they navigate their academic and personal lives here. I’ll be a resource for practical guidance, a listening ear when they need it, and a bridge to campus resources. I’m mostly looking forward to building relationships and helping students feel at home, even when they are far away from theirs.
What do you hope students will gain from working with you?
I hope they’ll feel valued, encouraged, and empowered — not just to succeed academically, but also to thrive personally. I want them to know they have someone they can trust and turn to.
If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
I’d love to visit Greece. I’m fascinated by its rich history, stunning islands, and warm hospitality.
What’s your go-to comfort food or favorite meal?
My go-to comfort food is matooke (steamed Ugandan green bananas) served with beef— it’s a classic Ugandan dish that reminds me of home.
Do you have a favorite quote or motto you live by?
Yes — “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)”
