Technos International Week Reflection

Global Scholar and ’25 graduate Chanelle’s study abroad reflection on her time in Japan participating in Technos International Week.

At Purchase College, I was honored to be selected as one of two representatives to participate in Technos International Week (TIW) at Technos College in Japan. This opportunity allowed me to immerse myself in a different culture and marked a significant milestone in my academic and personal development. Upon receiving the acceptance email, I felt a mix of excitement and apprehension, a surge of electricity coursing through me. While I was thrilled to be chosen for such a prestigious opportunity, I felt anxious about the journey ahead.

As a plus-sized Black woman, navigating a new country with distinct cultural norms was daunting. I was acutely aware of the potential challenges associated with my identity in a society so different from mine. While I felt proud to represent my college, I also felt a heavy responsibility, contemplating how I would be perceived in a culture that emphasizes conformity.

To prepare for my trip, I spent time learning about Japanese culture, customs, and etiquette. I wanted to experience everything with respect and an open mind. Understanding the importance of politeness, bowing, and different ways of communicating was crucial. I practiced some basic Japanese phrases to connect with the local culture and show my willingness to engage.

Chanelle in a yukata When I arrived in Japan, I was amazed by how traditional and modern elements blended together. The lively streets of Tokyo, filled with bright skyscrapers and ancient temples, perfectly represented Japanese culture—a beautiful mix of the past and present. I was also fortunate to wear a yukata, a gift from bridal design students at Technos College, during a traditional tea ceremony. This moment helped me appreciate the customs that shape Japanese culture even more.

An unforgettable experience was my visit to Misugi Village, where I fostered connections with both nature and my fellow students. We engaged in soccer and participated in games that transcended linguistic differences, fostering a sense of community. However, the most impactful experience occurred at the onsen, a traditional Japanese hot spring. Initially apprehensive about sharing this intimate experience, I discovered a deep sense of sisterhood as we immersed ourselves in the soothing waters. In that moment, we were able to share secrets, laugh, and connect on an emotional level.

Although I faced challenges tied to my identity, I found strength in accepting who I am. My presence generated interest and led to important conversations about our different cultures, helping to break down stereotypes.

Overall, my experience at Technos College during TIW was life-changing, filled with self-exploration and cultural exchange. Japan embraced me warmly, and I left with wonderful memories, broadened perspectives, and a greater understanding of the rich diversity of global cultures.
