Personal Growth While Abroad in Madrid
Global Scholar and ’25 graduate Chanelle’s study abroad reflection on her spring 2023 semester in Madrid, Spain at Universidad de Nebrija.
In spring 2023, I started a transformative journey by studying abroad at Antonio Nebrija University in Madrid, Spain - my first time away from home. I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness as I faced the challenges of being in a new country, as a Black woman from Purchase college and a Gilman Scholar, where I didn’t know anyone and had to adapt to a different culture.
At Nebrija, I concentrated on the Hispanic Studies program at the Princessa Campus, diving into Spanish language and culture. As an intermediate student, I struggled with the language’s complexities while trying to embrace the local customs. Despite the initial challenges, being an exchange student greatly enhanced my academic experience. In addition, joining the Buddy Club helped me connect with local students, who were eager to share their culture, making it easier to feel part of the community.
On my birthday, I decided to see a Flamenco show. This experience connected me deeply to Spanish culture and sparked my desire for immersion, encouraging me to explore new cities, try local foods, and visit historical sites, such as the Royal Palace, Prado Museum, and National Archaeological Museum. I also attended the Spanish version of “The Lion King” which was a huge milestone for me; I realized just how much my Spanish skills had improved, feeling pride in understanding the dialogue and nuances of the performance.
As my time in Spain drew to a close, I reflected on the remarkable metamorphosis I had experienced. I arrived feeling shy and overwhelmed, but I blossomed into a more confident individual, forging connections that transcended language barriers. My experiences in Spain have profoundly shaped my academic and social pursuits. I aspire to create spaces where everyone feels valued, just as I felt during my time abroad. I will forever cherish the relationships I built and the lessons I learned, committed to promoting acceptance and understanding in all aspects of my life.
