New Staff Member Spotlight: Kristin Bruno-Bates
Get to know our new Director of Conferences and Rentals.
Tell us a little bit about you – where you’re from, hobbies, interests, etc.
I’m originally from Hudson County, New Jersey, but now I call Orange County, New York, home!
My husband and I are both big baseball fans, having played softball and baseball in high school and throughout our youth. We love going to Yankees games and supporting our local minor league team, the Hudson Valley Renegades.
We also enjoy traveling and exploring new places, especially in the Hudson Valley, where we visit the amazing wineries. At home, our three cats—Cooper, CeCe, and Artie—are the center of my world and bring so much joy to our lives.
How did you find your way to Purchase?
I’ve always been passionate about roles that allow me to make a meaningful impact.
Before coming to Purchase College, I worked in a similar position at Drew University for nine years, where I honed my skills in event management and space optimization.Earlier in my career, I was involved in community engagement and fundraising with the American Cancer Society and served as a teacher and instructional coach.
When I moved to New York, I was drawn to Purchase College because of its commitment to public education and fostering creativity. I saw an incredible opportunity to build something meaningful here—to create a department and team that reflects the college’s dynamic and innovative spirit.
What is your role at Purchase?
I’m the Director of Conferences and Rentals, where I work with external groups to bring their events to campus and make the most of our unique spaces.
I also chair the Campus Events Committee, collaborating with colleagues to enhance event planning and coordination across the college.
Is there anything you want to staff to know about your department?
Our department recently welcomed a new team member, Monique Ford, who is the Rentals Booking Manager for The Performing Arts Center! Monique will be working closely with Ian Driver, The PAC’s General Manager, as we collaborate to support her efforts in generating revenue for the college. Both Ian and I are thrilled to have her on board and excited about the opportunities ahead.
How does Purchase compare to your previous place(s) of employment? Did any past work experiences prepare you for situations you’ve encountered here thus far?
Purchase College stands out for its creative energy and collaborative environment.
My previous roles have helped me develop strong skills in working with clients, adapting to challenges, and navigating complex situations. My background in community engagement and education taught me how to connect with diverse groups and remain flexible when faced with new challenges.
In the events world, you need to pivot quickly, think on your feet, and communicate effectively. With so many moving parts, clear communication is key, and those experiences have been invaluable in navigating the unique opportunities here.
Is there anyone you want to shout out who’s been particularly helpful to you as a new employee?
There have been so many wonderful people who have been incredibly welcoming and helpful as I’ve settled in. I’m especially grateful to Chris Bisignano, Erica Kelly, Ian Driver, Lukas Gunderson, and Mike Kopas, who have all been amazing in their own ways. Each of them has offered support and guidance that’s made a big difference, and I truly appreciate everything they’ve done to help me get acclimated.
What are some upcoming events staff may be interested in?
If you’re not attending events at The Performing Arts Center, you’re really missing out! Faculty and staff can enjoy discounts for the presenting series. If it’s a late-night event, you can grab dinner on campus or just across the street before attending. I’ve already been to a few performances, and they’ve been top tier.
This spring, you can look forward to the Chamber Music Society, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Westchester Philharmonic, and the incredible dance illusionist group, Momix, performing “Alice.” The PAC showcases top-notch performances that really connect us to the cultural vibrancy of NYC. Check out the full schedule on their website.
The Conservatory of Theatre Arts has a couple of exciting Shakespeare performances with a contemporary twist this spring. Don’t miss Macbeth, March 7–15 in the CMFT, with several 7:30pm weeknight shows, or The Tempest, March 14–20 in The PAC, also with 7:30pm weeknight performances.
Support the Purchase College Panthers! Basketball and volleyball are in season, with weeknight games often starting around 6:00pm. A few key matchups include women’s basketball facing Sarah Lawrence on Tuesday, January 7, and men’s basketball against Mount Saint Mary College on Wednesday, February 19. Also, mark your calendar for men’s volleyball on Wednesday, April 2, as they take on our neighbors down the road, Manhattanville College.
A special plug for Commencement on Friday, May 16, at the Westchester County Center. As chair of the Commencement Committee, this is always my favorite event in higher education. It’s a time to celebrate the hard work and achievements of our students, faculty, and staff. It truly feels like the “Big Game” of the academic year.
The PSC Communications committee would like to thank Kristin for taking the time to introduce herself to us! Welcome, Kristin!
