Celebrating 100 Years of Marcel Marceau

Assistant Professor Lenka Pichlíková studied with the Marceau and teaches mime and Commedia Dell’Arte to Purchase students.

This week marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Marcel Marceau, the most famous 20th-century classical mime whose name was once synonymous with classical pantomime throughout the United States. Marceau was born in Strasbourg, France, on March 22, 1923, and died on September 22, 2007.

During the fall semester of 2023, Purchase students can study mime and Commedia dell’ Arte with Assistant Professor Lenka Pichlíková Burke, who studied with Marceau in his American master classes and has performed both mime and full-length mimodramas.

Students can expect to explore physical theatre and the traditions of Commedia and pantomime, including mask making, scenario creation, and physical practice of the form.

Prerequisites required.
