Pandemic Silver Linings

Staff members share the bright spots among the challenges.

I’m sure we have all experienced the dark side of the pandemic, but I discovered that there were also—well, maybe not bright spots—but spots that were somewhat less dark.

I reached out to colleagues to see if they had also found silver linings in the past 2+ years.

Here are some of their responses!

I was given the opportunity to teach a course for four semesters during the pandemic, which is something I’ve always been interested in doing and truly enjoyed. Additionally, the new policies around remote work that sprung out of the pandemic have been wonderful for reducing stress, restoring a better work-life balance… not to mention the savings on tolls and gas!

I don’t know if I can call what I experienced “benefits” because the pandemic has been so challenging in so many ways, but there have been opportunities with the new technologies. I lived for almost 10 years in California and have missed my in-laws and friends. Zoom has allowed me to gather people I care about together and have conversations, laughter, good cries, and even play readings.

One thing really stands out. It taught me to slow down. The pandemic forced all of us to stop doing pretty much everything. I started going out again at the pace that everything opened back up. So I’m not one who was afraid to fly or go to concerts – I also never minded wearing a mask. But I now just say “no” if I don’t want to do something. Staying home on occasion is OK. Another thing – because this was global, I started traveling more within my own country. I saw Alaska and that’s not a trip that had been on a bucket list. But it was outdoors and since we have the vaccine here we chose to go there instead of Europe. Alaska was one of the best trips I’ve ever taken! Also took a drive up to Maine, another state I’d never seen. We have a lot to see right here!

I had extended conversations with my neighbors, I was also able to pick up groceries for those with elevated health risks who could not go to the supermarket. I was able to take longer walks around my neighborhood. I spent Christmas with my family in 2021, something that I have only done three or four times in the last 20+ years at Purchase! I have learned new skills through my redeployment. I am sure other people learned a second or third language or cured cancer or something profound. My silver linings are pretty small.
