Library Course Reserves

Instructors, please submit your Library Course Reserve Requests using the Course Reserves Request Forms for books and films.

Print Books and eBooks on Course Reserve:

  • Submitting Requests: All course reserve requests for books (print or ebook) must be submitted via theCourse Reserves Request Form - Books. Requests submitted via email will not be accepted. (To request DVDs or streaming video, see processes outlined below). This form should be used for print books the Library already owns (that you’d like us to move from the main stacks to be put on reserve) and/or books that the Library does not own (that you’d like us to buy and put on reserve). The same form is used to request ebooks. All reserves requests must be submitted by the instructor of record or their delegate (e.g. a learning assistant, administrative assistant, etc).

  • Processing Time: Reserve requests are processed in the order in which they are received. It can take anywhere from 2 weeks (for books we already own) to 8 weeks (for books we have to buy) to go from a request to a usable print/electronic book. Please submit requests as soon as possible to minimize delays!

  • Personal Copies: The Library cannot place personal copies of books on reserve. Instructors are welcome to donate personal copies that will then go into the Library’s collection.

  • Accessing eBooks on Reserve: Once an ebook is purchased, a librarian will provide you with a URL to access the ebook at any time. You can then add the URL to Moodle for your students to access. If you have ebook titles you wish to reuse from previous semesters, you can simply continue using the same URL; there is no need to place a new request for an ebook that you have used in past semesters. Some ebooks are limited by the number of simultaneous users (usually 1, 3, or unlimited). Your liaison librarian will communicate the type of ebook license to you.
  • Accessing Print books on Reserve: Print books are on reserve for the entire semester. They may be checked out for 3 hours and are in-Library use only (they cannot leave the building). Print reserve books may be returned and checked out again after a 30-minute waiting period to allow equal access. More details found on our Borrowing & Renewing page.

Streaming Films/Video for Courses:

  • Before placing a streaming film request, check what we already have in our Streaming Video databases: SWANK, AVON, and Kanopy. Not all streaming films show up in Discovery Search, so peruse each database on the Streaming Video help guide individually to explore the full range of films we have.
  • Submitting Requests: All course reserve requests for streaming video must be submitted via the Streaming Film Requests Form. Requests submitted via email will not be accepted. The Library is currently only able to acquire streaming video that directly supports course work and is required viewing for a course. All reserves requests must be submitted by the instructor of record or their delegate (e.g. a learning assistant, administrative assistant, etc).
  • Processing Time: Reserve requests are processed in the order in which they are received. Last-minute requests will not be prioritized. It can take 10+ weeks to go from a request to a licensed streaming video that is ready for use.
  • Availability: We cannot guarantee all requests will be fulfilled or that electronic/streaming versions of every title exist. Please submit requests early and plan alternatives when possible.

DVD Films:

Films used in courses are housed in the Academic Film Collection. These films retain a permanent reserves status. Email Valencia Wallace (valencia.wallace@purchase.edu) if you need any of the following:

  • To request films from the Academic Collection for a 7-day loan period
  • To request an extension to the 7-day loan period
  • To request additions to the Academic Film collection
  • Please advise students whose academic work requires extended use of films from the Academic Film Collection to email Valencia Wallace to request loan arrangements on a case by case basis.

If you have any questions, please review the information on the Course Reserves page and contact your subject liaison for assistance.
