Julia Koyfman ’19

PWSW grad at Seattle Opera

Julia Sonya Koyfman ’19 (PWSW) has been selected as a librettist for the inaugural cohort of the Jane Lang Davis Creation Lab at the world-renowned Seattle Opera.

The Creation Lab aims to support a new generation of storytellers in opera. The initiative was open to Washington artists ages 18–30 of all backgrounds, and in November 2020, 15 librettists and composers were chosen, including Julia and her composer Paul Stovall.

In addition to working with Seattle Opera administrators, each team of writers has dedicated time with mentors from across the music and theater world. Mentors for this year’s lab include Tazewell Thompson (librettist and director), Aishé Keita (actress), Jerre Dye (librettist), Zach Redler (composer), and Purchase Profesor, Kamala Sankaram (composer).

Julia and Paul’s short opera Flush, a dark dramedy about a young woman struggling with bulimia, will be performed in Seattle at Tagney Jones Hall at the Opera Center in 2021.

Congrats Julia!
