Professor Paul Kaplan Presents at the CMRS, UCLA
Paul Kaplan, professor of art history, will present at the conference, “Bodies and Maps: Personification of the Continents” taking place January 12-13, 2018, at the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (CMRS) at the University of California, Los Angeles.
The two-day event explores the personification of continents depicted in various media in Renaissance and Early Modern Europe, and how human representations in this tradition have changed over time.
As a renowned scholar in Renaissance art and representations of people of color in both European and American art, Professor Kaplan will be giving a presentation titled “Magi, Winds, Continents: Dark Skin and Territorial Embodiment in Early Modern Images,” in which he will examine this cultural phenomenon from an art historian’s perspective.
