What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: I want prospective students to know that Purchase has everything you’re looking for. You will be welcomed into a space where you are free to explore any of your interests with the guarantee that you’ll be learning from some of the most knowledgeable professors.

The reason I became an Ambassador: I became an Ambassador because with the constantly changing society we are in and the increasing rates of student loan debt, college is starting to look like a waste for many young people. Being that I was in their shoes two years ago and had to face the benefits and drawbacks of investing in college while being less enthusiastic about the experience as a whole, I believe I have insight into what many high school seniors are feeling. It’s important for me to be a voice for the students who are skeptical as someone who was incredibly skeptical myself.

My favorite spot on campus: My favorite spot on campus is behind the Visual Arts building. The view of the sunsets back there is amazing.

Why I chose Purchase: I chose Purchase because the Visual Arts conservatory was exactly what I was looking for at the perfect distance from home. Being a student in the conservatory forces me to become incredibly well-read and thoughtful in my own art practice. Additionally, Purchase is a great midpoint for me of going away for school and missing home. Being that Purchase is so close to my home in Brooklyn, I can pretty much go home whenever I want. Likewise, when I don’t need to get away, I can stay at school and hang out with my friends.

My hobbies and interests: I love riding my bike around the city and around campus, and listening to music. I love making sketchbooks and hand binding them in different ways.

Future plans after Purchase: After Purchase I intend to attend graduate school for education after taking a year off to work and relax after going to school for 16 years.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: To me, “Think Wide Open” means to exist in such a way that we are able to interact honestly. When one ‘thinks wide open,’ they remove any preconceived notions, assumptions, or expectations of their peers and let others live without pressure or restraint.

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: Purchase is home to many creative and inviting students, making it really easy to collaborate and make art!

The reason I became an Ambassador: To help high school students with the college application process, while also giving them insight as to why I love Purchase.

My favorite spot on campus: The Dance Building. It is always warm, and there’s tons of natural light.

Why I chose Purchase: Originally, Purchase was not my top choice, but I ended up here when I learned about how student-driven the theatre program is. The school also allows me the opportunity to study different art forms on top of just acting.

My hobbies and interests: Dancing, singing, traveling, cooking, and drinking iced coffee all year round.

Future plans after Purchase: Go to graduate school and become a professional actor.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: Experience and celebrate new and different things.

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: I would like perspective students to know that Purchase provides a mixture of academic, social, and professional opportunities that allows for tons of personal growth.

My favorite spot on campus: My favorite spot on campus has to be the great lawn with its large trees! They’re a relaxing to sit under and it’s beautiful place to be in nice weather.

Why I chose Purchase: I chose Purchase because Purchase allowed me to pursue both my academic and social goals at the same time.

My hobbies and interests: Some of my hobbies include video games, hanging out with friends, watching movies, and attending events on campus.

Future plans after Purchase: After Purchase I hope to travel as I build my professional skills.

  • Nadia Duncan `19

Theatre & Performance Major and Opera/Classical Voice Minor from Vienna, Virginia

    She/Her/Hers

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: One word: collaboration. There are so many fantastic and talented artists on campus, but unlike most schools of its kind, the Purchase community is full of collaboration on independent projects. The students at our school are so creative and so driven to put up student productions, create films, plan events at the Stood, put up performance pieces, and just display their art all over campus. And the best part is that the faculty encourages us to do it!

The reason I became an Ambassador: I wanted to share how much I love my school with those who are still in the decision-making stage. I know exactly how it feels to be nervous and unsure about college, and I wanted to help guide and support my peers and their parents the way that I was when I came to Purchase for the first time.

My favorite spot on campus: I absolutely love the little fountain and the trees behind the Admissions building. It’s a great place to walk and even lay in the grass during warmer weather.

Why I chose Purchase: Purchase was actually kind of a last minute decision for me. I had auditioned for the Musical Theatre programs at many other schools, and unfortunately, didn’t get accepted. A family friend suggested I apply to Purchase, a school that I had never heard of, but because I didn’t have any other choices at that time, I applied. I committed to Purchase having never set foot on the campus; I was completely unfamiliar with anything about the school. But, when I came to Orientation, I fell in love. I knew that I was right where I belong, and the rest is history.

My hobbies and interests: I’ve pretty much been focused on my music and my acting for now, as well as working in various offices on campus including Community Engagement, Career Development, the Purchase College Great Potential Program and Student Financial Services. I do want to maintain my passion for dance, and just stay active, so I plan on trying to take a couple more dance classes like I did last spring.

Future plans after Purchase: Whether I stay in New York or move back to NoVA, or even move somewhere completely new, I’ll be performing. Where I go all depends on where the opportunities take me. My dream would be to be able to survive on my artistry alone.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: To me, “Think Wide Open” is homage to the individualism and self-expression that we see at Purchase. Everyone just lets their personal style run wild and there are so many characters on campus. One Friday night, I was talking to my best friend about my outfit, and how I was nervous to wear such a scandalous dress. Then she said to me “Don’t worry. No matter what you’re wearing, someone will always look weirder.” And trust me, she’s right.

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: This school is full of the best kind of weirdos around!

The reason I became an Ambassador: I became an Admissions Ambassador because I wanted to transfer the energy and excitement I feel about Purchase to prospective students and make every single person know that they could find a home here.

My favorite spot on campus: The bathrooms in the PAC are spectacular.

Why I chose Purchase: I chose Purchase because of its close proximity to New York City, the absolutely amazing arts programs, and the diversity of the student body.

My hobbies and interests: I enjoy playing guitar, piano and juggling.

Future plans after Purchase: Oooooo… I wish I had an idea.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: Think Wide Open means listening, inventing, creating, collaborating, discussing, and accepting.

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: Purchase College is a big school with many people from diverse backgrounds.

The reason I became an Ambassador: In order to help students learn about Purchase College and the awesome programs that happen here.

My favorite spot on campus: The VA (Visual Arts Building)

Why I chose Purchase: I chose Purchase because the campus is expansive, while still being close to New York City.

    My hobbies and interests: Bikes

Future plans after Purchase: Work in the design industry and travel the world.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: Thinking wide open means that people should be able to explore new ideas and concepts freely.

  • Theresa Gregory `18

Theatre Design/Technology (Costume Design) Major from Seaford, New York

    She/Her/Hers

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: Purchase is a lovely and welcoming community that easily and quickly becomes your new home! You get to meet incredibly talented and kind people from all over the country, which expands your knowledge about the world around you.

The reason I became an Ambassador: I became an ambassador because I give specific tours for incoming theatre design/technology students, and it inspired me to give tours for the entire campus as well.

My favorite spot on campus: The tables/benches outside of Starbucks.

Why I chose Purchase: I chose Purchase because it is so close to my hometown and I can travel to and from rather easily. I love having the luxury of going home on the weekends (if I’m not too busy) to visit friends and family. I also chose Purchase because of its unique atmosphere and people. Everyone is so quirky and fun, it’s hard to get sick of it here!

My hobbies and interests: I am currently teaching myself how to play the mandolin and I also love to do embroidery, crochet and other little DIY projects.

Future plans after Purchase: One day I wish to move to the UK and live with my lovely boyfriend Oscar. The plan is to work in the West End as a costume designer or costume supervisor. Hopefully I can work in both New York and England so I can stay connected with all my friends.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: To me, “Think Wide Open” correlates directly with the theatre world and collaborative process. If one doesn’t think wide open about new ideas and discoveries and keeps shutting down anything that may be too challenging, nothing substantial, new, or amazing will ever come about!

  • Tyrone Hodges `18

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: Use the time you spend here to get in touch with your artistry, whether or not it’s what you’re actively pursuing.

The reason I became an Ambassador: I’m a very energetic person and I love passing that energy on to others in hopes of giving them a good time.

My favorite spot on campus: The Dance Building

Why I chose Purchase: I love the arts scene on campus and it’s close enough to home, but far away at the same time.

My hobbies and interests: Dancing, singing, acting, writing, taking walks, napping

Future plans after Purchase: To become a professional dancer and travel the world going on tours with music artists.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: To be open to receiving and understanding any and all information, even if it differs from what you know or believe in.

  • Maya Jingles `19

Psychology and Sociology Double Major from The Bronx, New York

    She/Her/Hers

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: I would want prospective students to know that just like any college, Purchase isn’t for everyone, but if you feel like it’s for you (and you’ll know), you’ll have the time of your life! I want them to know that there are so many opportunities to take advantage of, professors who genuinely want you to succeed, and students who you’ll end up being friends with your whole life.

The reason I became an Ambassador: I became an Ambassador because I love Purchase! I toured here like 4 times and asked so many questions, so I when given the opportunity, I wanted to be the person answering the questions! I found that the Ambassadors gave me the most honest answers as a prospective student, so I couldn’t wait to do the same!

My favorite spot on campus: My favorite spot is right behind the VA (Visual Arts Building), especially when it’s warm! It’s almost always quiet, the breeze is just right, and I get a perfect unobstructed view of the sky!

Why I chose Purchase: I chose Purchase because it just felt right. That’s hard to explain, but after attending Accepted Students’ Day and various tours, this school felt like home, and I hadn’t even paid my deposit yet! There were also a bunch of meetups with other potential students in the city, and after just one of those hangout sessions, I knew I wanted to be surrounded by these people for the next 4 (now 2!) years, and for the rest of my life! After declaring my Majors and taking classes in what I loved, I knew this was the best place for me to pursue my education and study what I love!

My hobbies and interests: I’ve recently gotten into embroidery which I love, I enjoy photography (on the Instagram level, not the class level), I’m the Secretary of Self-Care Club, and I work at the More Store which is super fun! I’m also interested in mentoring and teaching. I’m a Peer Advisor and tend to work at summer camps and schools when Purch isn’t in session. Finally, I go to Nerf Club (which is really pretty cool when you think about it), and I write in a notebook which goes with me everywhere!

Future plans after Purchase: Aaah, I get this question a LOT and still don’t have a direct answer! I’ve been working at a Preschool for the past 2 years, so it would be cool to maybe teach in the future, whether it be to young kids or as a professor. As a Psych and Soc double major though, research is also really fascinating to me, so maybe one day I’ll work as a researcher too!

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: I’ve been hearing “Think Wide Open” for the past 2 years now, and it seems like the definition changes as I grow and change. As a prospective student, “Think Wide Open” just meant being accepting of others’ views. Now though, it also means to challenge what I don’t agree with and to think of things from different perspectives, not just the literal one.

  • Fatema Kamal `18

Transfer Sociology Major from Yorktown Heights, New York

    She/Her/Hers

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: It’s a small liberal arts college campus. Which is another way of saying that it’s a very intimate community with a diverse student population. It means that while you DON’T have to go far to seek out opportunities since they’re right at your fingertips, you DO need to take the initiative and actually grab that opportunity. Whether it’s visiting a professor’s office hours, or attending a performance on campus, or maybe even running for a student government position. Most if not all of your professors will know your names a few weeks in. Get to know them. Chat over lunch about music, or love, or politics. They can be your best resource, and sometimes even a shoulder to cry on. Go out and meet students who are like you. Go out and become friends with someone you never thought you’d be friends with. It happens a LOT here, trust me. Trust in yourself, too. Remain connected to the campus, and you’ll discover so many gems in so many unexpected ways and places.

The reason I became an Ambassador: I chose to become an Ambassador because I believe future students from all backgrounds, experiences, and situations need to be able to relate to their prospective home for the next four years on a personal, more human level. And since we are among the first faces they will see, it’s critical that I’m able to convey that. I want to share my struggles and triumphs with these students in a way that will inspire them to always keep moving forward no matter what. I want to help them find their own niche here.

My favorite spot on campus: The benches in the Main Plaza.

Why I chose Purchase: Before I matriculated, I spoke with some professors from my intended major department. And unlike my previous institution, Purchase had a much stronger and well-rounded program, with the additional advantage of the senior project requirement that, while a difficult and stressful process, really prepares you to become an independent thinker. The smaller class sizes also suit me really well, because they allow for discussions and sometimes heavy debates on subject matters. And the professors really care about making the material relatable to their students for application in real-world matters, which I think is critical in learning and retaining knowledge of any sort.

My hobbies and interests: Reading, spending time outdoors, chilling with family and friends, exploring new places and trying new things

Future plans after Purchase: Grad school :D

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: From my personal experience it means acceptance and opportunity. Everything and everyone at Purchase really widened my horizon. The professors constantly challenge me to exceed limits in both my thinking and actions, and by doing so they’ve inspired me to chase after opportunities I didn’t before. The aura of inclusivity that pervades the campus community has helped me to realize that it’s not just okay to be yourself, that’s exactly what you should aim to be, always. As a result, I’ve become surer of myself.

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: You’ll definitely find yourself while at Purchase.

The reason I became an Ambassador: I applied to be a Student Ambassador because I had a positive tour experience during both of my visits to Purchase College during my senior year of high school.  I wanted to provide perspective students with the same positive, well-rounded, and excited experience that I encountered during my tour visits.

My favorite spot on campus: The Multicultural Center.

Why I chose Purchase: I chose Purchase because I wanted an environment that claimed to accept people from all walks of life and fight for justice.

My hobbies and interests: Playwriting, directing, acting, reading, blogging, YouTube, social activism.

Future plans after Purchase: Working in the off-Broadway and off- off-Broadway theatre community.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: “Think Wide Open” means being able to have dialogue with those who come from different backgrounds than you.

  • Courtney Lykins `19

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: How open and inviting of a community we have! The campus is also full of some of the most creative people you’ll meet.

The reason I became an Ambassador: To let perspective students know how unique our campus is and to be a friendly face around campus.

My favorite spot on campus: The trails around campus

Why I chose Purchase:  I chose Purchase because of the atmosphere of acceptance, the proximity to New York City and the Neuberger Museum.

My hobbies and interests: Painting, reading, hiking and exploring new places!

Future plans after Purchase: Grad School

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: “Think Wide Open” means approaching every situation with empathy and compassion, listening to others and constantly challenging your own ideas on how the world should work.

  • Jonathan Mannato `19

Theatre & Performance  Major from Niskayuna, New York

    He/Him/His

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase:  Take every opportunity you can at Purchase! Purchase is a place to let the creative juices flow and you can allow yourself to be whoever you want to be. You can grow at this school in the best of ways.

The reason I became an Ambassador: I wanted to show prospective students all of the amazing and unique things Purchase College has to offer! I want to be able to give back what I have learned through the Purchase community.

My favorite spot on campus: Getting lost in the Visual Arts building or the Underground Theatre in the Performing Arts Center.

Why I chose Purchase: I chose Purchase because of its theatre programs, diversity, acceptance, and its literal mantra of “Think Wide Open.”

My hobbies and interests: I love Netflix, RuPaul’s Drag Race, acting/performing, creating theatre, being with my wonderful friends, and I love me some good Chinese food.

Future plans after Purchase: I wish I could tell you. Going with the artist flow!

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: Think Wide Open is not only for you to take a wider look at the world around you but to look inside yourself. When you come to college some people have a one track mind of knowing what they want, and some people have no idea what they want. Purchase is a gateway for you to explore who you are and to challenge your strengths and your weaknesses. To think wide open is to open yourself up to the world and take that leap!

  • Demetrius McCray `18

Philosophy Major and Theatre & Performance Minor from Yonkers, New York

    He/Him/His

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: I want them to know that this is the safest space for anyone that has ever felt different in their lives, it’s a place where you can explore yourself free of judgment and try to find not an external and material happiness but an internal sense of serenity and peace.

The reason I became an Ambassador: I became an Ambassador because I wanted to show people that Purchase is more than just a college, it’s a haven for all people.

My favorite spot on campus: The gym

Why I chose Purchase: I chose it for some metaphysical reason I wish I could explain but every time I discuss it, I become slightly nostalgic and emotional. I’ve wanted this since I was in the fourth grade so the fact that I am here is unbelievable.

My hobbies and interests: I loooooooovvvveee reading, I love the gym, I am a massive Star Wars nerd and Star Trek is growing on me. Talk to me about comic books.

Future plans after Purchase: I would love to be a founder of a non-profit organization.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: My Blackness is accepted.

  • David McLachlan `19

Graphic Design Major from Bohemia, New York

    He/Him/His

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: Purchase is undoubtedly one of the most unique colleges you will ever find. Change can be scary, but when you go to a school like Purchase the transition becomes motivating due to the encouraging community that is Purchase College!

The reason I became an Ambassador: As a new Ambassador, I was interested in the position due to how enthusiastic my tour guide was when I first visited Purchase. I wanted a chance to share the same enthusiasm I have for Purchase with other prospective students looking to come here.

My favorite spot on campus: I love hanging out with my friends on the Great Lawn on a nice, sunny day!

Why I chose Purchase:  I chose Purchase because of the overwhelming sense of comfort I felt when visiting Purchase. Purchase really is a community, wherever you turn there is always a friendly face to get to know. Secondly, I chose Purchase College because I fell in love with the Visual Arts Building. The professors, studio classes, and work spaces the Visual Arts Building has to offer is a dream for a graphic design major like myself, where I can immerse myself in all different forms of art, from printmaking to sculpture.

My hobbies and interests:  Finding new music, petting any and all animals

Future plans after Purchase: Although I am only a sophomore, the future seems uncertain but very bright. I hope to use my degree to become a freelance graphic designer and maybe go to grad school down the road.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: For me, Think Wide Open means having respect for others, to listen to what they have to say, even if you don’t agree; to educate yourself in order to be a better person. I believe having compassion for others is my most important trait, and it is a trait that I believe all people should possess.

  • Giancarlo Montes `18

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: It’s a place that lets you explore creatively, spiritually and academically, and the faculty especially encourages this.

The reason I became an Ambassador: At first it was to learn about Purchase, but now it’s to show prospective students why I love our programs.

My favorite spot on campus: The painted rocks (basically a bunch of huge boulders that have been painted on and there’s a fire pit and a stream). Its nice during the day because no one’s there and a great place to have a bonfire.

Why I chose Purchase: For the arts programs. The faculty and my peers are incredibly engaged and excited about making art work.

My hobbies and interests: Reading, hiking and after taking ONE yoga class; yoga. I’m one of those now.

Future plans after Purchase: I have no idea, hopeful working within my field outside of Manhattan.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: Being open to learning from everyone around you, and listening and challenging the ideas around you as well. This means being open to being challenged.

  • Kache’ Mumford `20

Theatre & Performance Major from Jacksonville, Florida

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: This is a place where you can just be yourself. If you aren’t sure who that is yet, this is also a great place to find out!

The reason I became an Ambassador: I wanted to show other kids my home away from home. I understand how hard it can be choose a school that you feel comfortable in and I just want to help make that decision easier.

My favorite spot on campus: Underground Theatre ( Performing Arts Center)

Why I chose Purchase: Great teachers who push you to do your best!

My hobbies and interests: Reading, watching movies, and going to see shows.

Future plans after Purchase: I will go get my Master’s in Acting. When I am done with that I will hopefully open up my own theatre company.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: Open your mind  to others’ points of view and ideas. Don’t be afraid to learn new things and don’t be afraid to think outside the box.

  • Travis Raeburn `20

Acting BFA major from Rosedale, NY

    He/Him/His

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: I want the prospective students to know as much about the school from the tours that they can because a college experience is an investment of your mental health, time, and money. Hopefully from the tours the students can have a solid idea of what to expect from Purchase College. Maybe they can find something they loved about it and why they want to apply and or, what they did not love. Now they know exactly what they want to look for in a school and how to move forward with their search process.

The reason I became an Ambassador: I remember when I was looking at colleges in high school (or even starting to explore the idea of going to college in junior high school) I wanted for someone to be very informative and truthful about their college experience and still be very relatable to kids in the city or inner city who are barely given opportunities to see schools, compared to the amount of opportunity other students from affluent neighborhoods may have.  Hopefully by being an Ambassador I can begin to bridge those gaps and encourage more students to continue their education.

My favorite spot on campus: My favorite spot on campus to relax or to reflect on my day would be the Music Building at night. Most students and faculty are no longer there and most rooms have pianos and rooms with carpets. Sometimes, I do homework inside of the practice rooms.

Why I chose Purchase: In the summer between my junior year and senior year of high school, I was cast in a staged reading of a newly work shopped play that was a part of a theatre festival. While watching the other work shopped plays, I noticed another actor of color who was amazing and was the only actor of color in his cast. After his performance, I asked where he got his theatre training and he told me he graduated from Purchase College with a BFA in Acting. I had heard of Purchase vaguely from other teachers but I did not know what their acting program offered and what their classes were like. Later that year, the same actor who I met invited me to Purchase to see “In The Red and Brown Water,” which was a beautiful performance  and the first college production I saw with actors who I felt were like me on stage with captivating storytelling ability. From there I knew I had to apply to Purchase College and when I was offered a spot I knew this was the place I wanted to be.

My hobbies and interests: My hobbies since the summer have been reading a lot of black empowerment books (fiction and non fiction). I watch a lot of anime, I have been stepping since I was ten years old and have done it all throughout  junior high school till the end of my high school career. I also do hip hop dance for fun. I have been acting since I was seven and I am currently pursuing a career in acting.

Future plans after Purchase: I am going to continue my endeavors in the arts and hopefully travel. I want to be involved in a lot of work that is written by black playwrights  and screenwriters that explore and show our diverse culture and community around the world.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: Think wide open to means to think in a more emancipated way in a space that is safe and creatively motivated. I think an environment where you can commit to expressing and viewing the world more openly and freely with out worrying about being seen as vulnerable is important in an educational experience. Hopefully Purchase can be that safe space for other students as well.

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: Purchase is a very free environment that always has something going on. It is very hard to be bored on this campus; there are always events, performances, clubs, open classes, and games to attend!

The reason I became an Ambassador: I wanted to become an Ambassador to meet students that are considering coming to this school, and help convince them that Purchase is a wonderful place to be.

My favorite spot on campus: The Stood and The Great Lawn

Why I chose Purchase: The remarkable dance program!

My hobbies and interests: I like dancing, going to performances, sleeping, watching movies, reading, listening to music…oh, and cartwheeling!

Future plans after Purchase: After college I intend to become a choreographer, as well as a teacher and performer.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: This means being accepting and welcoming to all the different ideas, people, etc. that one may encounter. To “think wide open” means to try new things, meet new people, eat a different kind of sandwich, and explore outside your boundaries!!

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: I want prospective students to know how pleasantly surprised they’ll be if they attend Purchase College. How alive the community is, how engaged we are in various forms of art and culture, how passionate we are in our beliefs and protests, how committed we are to our work.

The reason I became an Ambassador: I love talking about things I am proud of, and I am proud of this school and all it’s done for me.

My favorite spot on campus: My favorite spot is the bleachers by the baseball field. You can watch the sun go down past the trees.

Why I chose Purchase: I chose Purchase because I saw the kind of films that were being made by students here, and how much voice and passion were behind them, and I knew they were the kind of stories I wanted to tell.

My hobbies and interests: I enjoy making films, watching films and TV shows, listening to music, skateboarding, dancing, and photography.

Future plans after Purchase: I want to make films that mean something, but also make money. Wish me luck.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: Think Wide Open means being open-minded and empathetic to all the unique individuals you will meet, and being inspired by the stories they carry with them.

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: There are lots of ways to get involved on campus, whether it’s through one of our sixty-something clubs, a sports team, or a part-time job. If you have an idea for an event or program, you can make it happen!

The reason I became an Ambassador: I love talking to people about Purchase! I want to help graduating high school students find a college where they feel at home, like I did when I came to Purchase.

My favorite spot on campus: The Library!

Why I chose Purchase: I decided to come to Purchase while I was taking a tour of campus. I just felt like I belonged here.

My hobbies and interests: I’m a sex educator on campus and on Scarleteen.com. I also love to cook, knit, and play music.

Future plans after Purchase: I plan on continuing to teach sex ed, hopefully working with Planned Parenthood.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: Be open to trying new things. Don’t make assumptions based on appearances.

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: It’s an accepting and quite beautiful place to live.

The reason I became an Ambassador: I want to spread the love I have for SUNY Purchase.

My favorite spot on campus: Great Lawn

Why I chose Purchase: It’s close to New York City but still provides a college experience without it being in a city.

My hobbies and interests: Photography, Dance, and Lacrosse

Future plans after Purchase: I want to become a psychiatrist

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: The phrase “think wide open” is one that I live by. To always accept new ideas and people is the only way one will hope to grow. Without having a flexible mindset, one will not be able to grow. Therefore, I keep this phrase in mind as I journey through not just my college experience but life itself.

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: I want students to know the incredible value of Purchase. This is a small, culturally saturated, vibrant community. Purchase doesn’t seem to advertise as much as some other schools, so as a nervous high school student planning the rest of their life, it becomes much easier to pick what they know more about. I want students to know that this was my personal concern, and that I could not be more happy with my choice of Purchase College.

The reason I became an Ambassador: I really love this school. I always have (I went here for preschool at The Children’s Center on campus). My time at the VA (Visual Arts Building) has included some of the most event packed and beneficial days of my life. As someone who loves design, my education is exactly what I wanted, and I want to be able to share that feeling with prospective students. I want them to be as excited as I was and I want to be a smiling representative for the school that I love and am proud to call myself a member of.

My favorite spot on campus: The VA. It’s where I get to see incredible things be made and where I do all of my work. It really feels like a home to me, and everyone knows everyone. I love spending time here.

Why I chose Purchase: Beyond my personal history at this school, it has a positive reputation in the art world. That, and it is very affordable. I will be graduating Purchase debt free, allowing me to focus on beginning my professional career.

My hobbies and interests: Beyond designing and making things which is my passion, I love all forms of media. I really love playing video games, as well as watching television programs and movies. I love supporting local artists and going to shows. I also love hiking, it’s my favorite outdoor activity and during the summer I go on at least one big hike a week in the bear mountain area.

Future plans after Purchase:  I plan on living in the city as it is an epicenter in the design world. I want to work at a design firm for some time, be on a payroll. Then long down the line I want to have my own design firm. I already work freelance under the name John Bradford Design.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: To me, Think Wide Open goes far beyond ‘being accepting to all.’ I believe it means allowing yourself to learn. Allow yourself to interact in mediums you wouldn’t have before you came here. Participate in conversations you wouldn’t have prior. Befriend people you normally wouldn’t, see what comes of it. Think Wide Open means be more, be your best. I believe Purchase perfectly facilitates this ideology.

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: I think the biggest thing I want prospective students to know about Purchase is that their Purchase experience is completely dependent on what they make of it. There are a lot of chances for Purchase students to sort of construct room for the things they care about while they’re here. I think it’s really important for students to come into Purchase feeling like they’re in control of the next four years of their life, because they really are and it feels good to know that if something isn’t working out, you have total power to change things around so they can best benefit you!

The reason I became an Ambassador: I became an Ambassador for a lot of reasons! I thought it would be a good way to connect to Purchase more, and it’s honestly really fun to know a bunch of little things about campus. Being an Ambassador really makes me appreciate and understand Purchase better, and I like that my job is to show other people why Purchase is a cool place!

My favorite spot on campus: Behind Alumni Village across the main road there’s a trail marked by a red dot on a telephone pole. If you follow the path it brings you to a really sweet little creek and it’s a really nice place to sit and read when it’s warm out.

Why I chose Purchase: I chose Purchase mostly because it was an affordable school close to the city but not IN the city that had a cinema studies program. I also had ties to the music scene and had always heard good things about the overall feel of the school and community.

My hobbies and interests: I’m into art, film, and media. I care a lot about human rights and the environment. I really like things that use art/film/media to make political points about human rights and the environment. Interdisciplinary art and activism.

Future plans after Purchase: I want to write essays for academic journals. Beyond that, I’m not sure!

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: To me, “Think Wide Open” is in reference to the personal responsibility that all members of our community should take the care to uphold. I think open-mindedness is especially important right now in a time when so many people in our world don’t take the time to look at the world and situational aspects of the world from perspectives other than their own. The concept of “Think Wide Open” worked to make Purchase what it is today– a hub of acceptance and tolerance for others. “Think Wide Open” is a mantra we should all repeat in our heads daily.

What I want prospective students to know about Purchase: I always compare Purchase to endless pizza! You’d think that it couldn’t get better, then you’re surprised by something new.

The reason I became an Ambassador: I love being the first face people see when they come on campus!

My favorite spot on campus: The couches in Starbucks!

Why I chose Purchase: THE DIVERSITY!

My hobbies and interests: Eating and sleeping

Future plans after Purchase: In the future, I hope to figure out what I actually want to pursue. I’m interested in working with marketing and advertising in the beauty industry, project management, or event coordination.

What “Think Wide Open” means to me: Thinking Wide Open applies to people who are introverted or extroverted; students who are quiet to voice their opinions through different mediums of art, for example. Meanwhile, it allows outspoken students to get out and speak their mind.
