Take your songwriting to the next level as you learn to write, record, perform, and promote your own music—no matter the style.
Whether you’re into pop, hip-hop, rock, R&B, or something totally original, you’ll explore melody, lyrics, and song structure, while gaining hands-on experience with recording and sharing your work. All experience levels are welcome—whether you’re just starting out or already writing your own songs, this is your chance to grow as an artist and make music that’s truly your own.
Grades 9–12
Elevate your songwriting to the next level with daily small-group instruction in piano and guitar, lyric writing, music theory, and arranging. Master industry-standard software like Pro Tools and GarageBand, and discover powerful strategies to market yourself and your music through online and grassroots channels. Sharpen your live performance skills with guidance from seasoned professionals, and walk away with a polished recording of your final performance.
Typical Day
Morning Sessions
9:30am - 12:00pm
Each morning begins with Song Discovery, where students listen to a great song and unpack its style, form, and feel through group discussion. This energizing start leads into the day’s Lecture, which explores key elements of songwriting—from melody and lyric writing to song form and music theory. Workshops then build on these concepts with hands-on practice in ear training, song analysis, and live performance techniques, giving students the tools to immediately apply what they’ve learned.
12:00pm - 1pm
Lunch
Weather permitting, students have the opportunity to enjoy lunch outdoors with their Teaching Assistants, soaking in the beauty of the Purchase College campus, connecting with fellow students, and recharging their energy before heading into afternoon classes and activities.
1pm - 3:30pm
Afternoon Sessions
In the afternoon sessions, students dive into the heart of the Songwriting program through Masterclass, where they share their original songs and receive supportive, constructive feedback from instructors and peers. Students also are introduced to Music Technology and Recording, exploring digital music software to mix, arrange, and record their own tracks. Additional Music Business lessons may include industry skills such as forming a band, promoting and distributing music, marketing, and understanding basic copyright law, giving students a well-rounded foundation for their creative careers.
Final Day
At the end of the two-week session, students perform live or share a video of their original songs
