Music Theory

Noncredit
Traces the history of Western concert music, providing an overview and foundation. The course begins with a focus on world music, placing Western concert music in the greater context of its relationship to other cultures. The musical cultures of India and the Arabic countries of North Africa are examined for their impact on Western concepts. MTH 2510 and 2520 may be taken in either order.

Designed with the nonmusician in mind, this course explores the aesthetics of music through time in the Western world. Parallels in the worlds of art, politics, economics, and philosophy are explored with the goal of giving students a better understanding of how the music of today does, and does not, relate to that of previous centuries.

You’ll gain a complete understanding of rhythm, melody, and harmony, and you’ll be able to recognize pitches on the musical staff and on the keyboard. Each lesson will build on previous lessons, while also introducing new musical concepts.

You’ll explore the keyboard in full detail, with an emphasis on the structure of major scale and the signatures of major keys. You will examine the many significant contributions early music theorists made to the understanding of music and be able to build intervals, major scales, and chords. By the time you complete this comprehensive and full-featured course, you’ll be able to read, write, and even play simple pieces of music!

Music Made Easy - instructor Guided 6 Weeks Access / 24 Course Hours

Learn about music therapy and sound healing and their ability to help individuals of all ages to address their physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs during healing. The outcome of this certificate is to describe music therapy and sound healing and their effects on the brain, at the end of life, and with specific health conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Who Can Register?

Noncredit courses offered by the School of Continuing Education are open to anyone qualified to do college-level work. Proficiency in English is required.

Adults with a high school diploma or its equivalent and visiting students from other colleges. .
High school students who are at least 16 years old and who have the ability to do college-level work may enroll in noncredit adult courses with parental permission and at the discretion of the School of Continuing Education Appeals Committee.
Purchase College matriculated students may enroll (excluding the noncredit option in credit courses). To guarantee space in a noncredit course, Purchase matriculated students need to register early and pay the full noncredit tuition.

What is the Cost?

What is the Refund Policy?

To drop or withdraw from a noncredit course, students must submit a completed and signed add/drop form.
The refundable tuition amount (excluding nonrefundable fees) is based on the tuition refund schedule and determined by the date the add/drop form is received.
No refunds can be granted for any reason (including illness or other medical reasons) after the periods listed in the tuition refund schedule.

Each partner has its own cancellation and refund policies (School of Continuing Education policies do not apply).
