Matt Gunther ’87

Matt Gunther is a New York–based photographer and director whose editorial, commercial, and documentary work centers narrative and human character. A lifelong New Yorker, he earned a BFA from SUNY Purchase and has photographed subjects ranging from artists and actors to athletes, police officers, skateboarders, and communities across the city.

His long-term project documenting daily life in Newark became the monograph Probable Cause. His photographs are held in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, and his work has appeared in publications including The New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, GQ, and The New Yorker.
