Gretchen Hildebran, a director, producer and editor, is a graduate of Stanford University’s Documentary Film Program.

More About Me

Hildebran produced and co-directed DECADE OF FIRE, about the fires that destroyed the South Bronx neighborhood in the 1970s, which premiered at DOCNYC and broadcast nationally on PBS’ Independent Lens, winning the 2019 Audience Award. The film also won the Best Documentary Director at the 2019 Newark Film Festival and screened with over 100 housing and racial justice community groups across the United States. Her previous films include WORTH SAVING (2004) about community overdose prevention, and OUT IN THE HEARTLAND (2005) explored anti-gay legislation in Kentucky. She shot Ramona Diaz’s THE LEARNING (2011) and edits for diverse clients including the History Channel, PBS and the United Nations Development Programme, and on independent documentaries. She most recently edited HBO’s A REVOLUTION ON CANVAS, which premiered at Tribeca in 2024. She is currently in production on a new documentary, THE PEOPLE VS. AUSTERITY, about debt and democracy in NYC, Puerto Rico and Detroit.
