Derek Shane Garcia ’13

Derek Shane Garcia ’13 is an independent film producer, director, editor, and cinematographer from NYC.



His latest feature film, A/way, premieres December 6, 2024 at the Dances With Films NY Film Festival in Manhattan.

The film tells the story of a travel journalist who suffers a profound loss and is then sent on assignment to Martinique, which sparks a candid reflection of her unsettled life.

Earlier in 2024, it won the Best Feature Audience Choice Award at the Festival of Cinema in NYC, and the Outstanding Narrative Feature and Outstanding Director of a Narrative Feature awards at the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival.


Garcia’s  films have been shown at Tribeca Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival, Brooklyn Film Festival, and have aired on Channel Thirteen, NYClife and HBO.

He has produced various features, shorts and promotional content for various companies and individuals.

In 2017-2018 he produced Trauma is a Time Machine with EP Barbara Broccoli, Director Angelica Zollo, Barrett Rouen and Micheal Reilly. It won Best Director at the 2018 Art of Brooklyn Film Festival and Best Independent Feature at 2018 Taormina Film Festival. Vertical Entertainment picked up the film this year, and it enjoyed a small theatrical release.

He also directed his own short film The Experience that picked up Best Director at the 2018 Chelsea Film Festival.

Garcia also serves as a freelance video editor for clients such as ViacomCBS and Allied Integrated Marketing, working on accounts including HBO, Amazon, Johnson & Johnson, Comedy Central, BET, MTV, and more.
