Isaac Castillo

Howdy!

Thanks for visiting my page :)

My name is Isaac Castillo. I’m a lighting designer originally from Denton, Texas, currently finishing up my BFA in Theatre Design/Technology with a concentration in Lighting Design at SUNY Purchase. I began experimenting with light as a design medium during my sophomore year of high school, when I was asked to design the lighting for our musical that year. I hesitantly agreed, not knowing that I would fall in love with something that seemed so foreign to me at the time. I’ve been slinging a wrench and turning on lights in dark rooms ever since then, and I’m quite glad I’ve never looked back.
During my time at Purchase, I’ve served as the lighting designer on Cyrano De Bergerac, as well as the assistant lighting designer on Sweat, and both Purchase Dance Company Fall 2021 and Spring 2022. Outside of Purchase, I’ve worked as an Electrician on Row and The Nine Solo Plays at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, and as the Lighting Intern on the Broadway productions of A Strange Loop and Roundabout’s 1776 revival.
I’ve been quite fortunate to receive recognition from the Design / Technology program as the inaugural recipient of the Ariel Bourke Award, while also receiving recognition from outside of school as one of the 2022 recipients of the Pat Mackay Diversity in Design Scholarship.
I’ve spent my time in school also learning from some incredible mentors, thanks in part to both ETC’s Fred Foster Student Mentorship Program, and the Equity Through Design Mentorship Program. Most recently, I participated in the 2023 Hemsley Lighting Portfolio Review.
