Hannah Garner

Lecturer of Dance

Hannah Garner (she/her/hers), named ’25 to Watch’ by Dance Magazine in 2020, is a NYC based dancer, choreographer, and dance educator making work that “tackles topics like death and queer identity through rigorous, inventive movement and wit” (Dance Magazine).

Garner’s work at 2nd Best Dance Company has been commissioned by Gibney Dance Inc, GroundWorks DanceTheater (Cleveland, OH), GALLIM x CreateArt, Kizuna Dance, SUNY Purchase, the Hartt School, among others. 2nd Best was an artist in residence at Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning (2022), GALLIM’s Moving Women Residency (2021), Atlantic Center for the Arts (New Smyrna Beach, FL, 2021), and Triskelion Arts (2019). Garner’s choreography has also been presented through Triskelion Arts, Mark Morris Dance Group, Dixon Place, New York International Fringe Festival, and The Wassaic Project, among others. Garner’s choreography appears in music videos for artists like Snail Mail, Half Waif and Frankie Cosmos; additional music credits include movement direction for Snail Mail band (Valentine World Tour, 2022). In addition to her performance and choreographic work, Garner finds a creative home in teaching: she is currently on faculty at SUNY Purchase, Gibney Dance Center, and Gibney PRO. Recently, in 2022, 2nd Best toured the west with their 2019 production, RED, ending at their hometown theater, Triskelion Arts in Brooklyn, for the final performances.

Garner, a New Jersey native, received her early dance training under former Ailey dancer Sharron Miller. Having graduated from the Conservatory of Dance at SUNY Purchase with a BFA in Performance and Composition and a minor in Arts Management, Garner has gone on to work with artists like Doug Varone, Raja Feather Kelly, Sue Bernhard Danceworks, and Megan Williams Dance, in venues such as The Joyce Theater, New York City Center, the Park Avenue Armory, and New York Live Arts.
