Jon Rubin

Associate Professor Emeritus of Film

Jon Rubin is the director of the SUNY Center for Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), a unit of the State University of New York’s Office of Global Affairs. He has also directed the COIL Institute for Globally Networked Learning in the Humanities, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, which has engaged 22 U.S. and 26 international universities in developing collaborative, shared, networked classrooms.

During his tenure at Purchase College, where he also contributed to the new media program from its inception, one of his signature courses was Cross-Cultural Video Production, in which SUNY students co-produced videos over the internet with peers in Turkey, Lithuania, Mexico, Belarus, and Germany.

Jon Rubin’s films have been shown at the Museum of Modern Art and at the Whitney Museum in New York City. As a media artist, he is best known for his Floating Cinema, a choreography of media images moving across the water at night. He has received Guggenheim, National Endowment for the Arts, Ford Foundation, and Fulbright fellowships.
