Leandro Benmergui

Associate Professor of History

My scholarly work focuses on the social and cultural history of urban renewal and housing programs in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro during the Cold War. My areas of interest include the urban social and cultural history of Latin America from a multidisciplinary and transnational perspective. My book manuscript (in preparation) is a transnational history of housing and poverty, framed within a multidisciplinary approach that includes social and cultural history, architecture, urban planning, and a history of sociology.

My BA is from Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina, and my PhD in history is from the University of Maryland.

At Purchase, I am an associate professor of history, and I teach courses in Latin American history, Latino/a history, and urban history, always with an eye on transnational processes. I also coordinate the Latin American studies program and am the director of Casa Purchase, An Outreach Center for Latin American Studies.

I am also the book review editor for Latin America for Planning Perspectives.
