Mitski ’13 Collaboration Receives Oscar Nomination

Mitski collaborated with Son Lux and David Byrne on “This Is A Life” for the Oscar-nominated Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Son Lux, the band who describes themselves as “something akin to a sonic test kitchen,” created the score for the Oscar-nominated film Everything Everywhere All At Once

Members Ryan Lott, Ian Chang, and Rafiq Bhatia spent more than two and a half years composing, recording, editing, and re-editing the two-hour+ soundtrack. It was the first time the group had scored a film together.

Son Lux reached out to David Byrne and Mitski, who collaborated on the theme song—“This Is A Life”—that runs over the closing credits.

The song received an Oscar® nomination for Best Original Song,

“‘After a movie like this, it feels like you just want something beautiful and serene and melancholic, but also just a relief,’ Ryan says. His dream for the song was to engage Mitski and David Byrne in singing two different songs that ultimately converge towards resolution. The journey to this point has been disorientating, intense and strangely transformative.”
