Your Books & Binges

A sample of your favorites books and binges.

What Are Your Reading? Why Do You Love It?

  • Thomas Sowell: Discrimination and Disparities. I wanted to read a book on race issues by a prominent Black intellectual that would challenge my thinking.
  • Josemaria Escriva, The Way. A meditative Catholic classic I am reading for spiritual discipline during Lent.
  • CS Lewis, Screwtape Letters. An old fashioned morality play rife with British wit.

  • Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino: Wonderfully insightful and often funny, Jia Tolentino is like Roland Barthes for the age of the internet.

Blue Zones Kitchen: This book follows “Blue Zones” or areas around the globes that have high concentrations of centenarians, and looks at common diets of these areas. I love that it is a great display of culture and health to help me inform my own intentional food choices.

What Are You Watching? Why Do You Love It?

I am binging the following you tube channels/podcasts:

  • Conversations with Coleman
  • Coleman Hughes Just Thinking Podcast
  • Darrel Harrison and Virgil Walker Just Thinking Out Loud
  • Desi-Rae Just Listen to Yourself
  • Kira Davis Braver Angels Podcast
  • John Wood Jr. and others
  • Why I love them: They feature people of color who explore issues of race and justice from a religious, conservative or other non-mainstream perspective that rejects Marxism and Critical Race Theory.

Edward Rosensteel, Manager of Finance and Administration

The Last Man on Earth: I’ll admit this was a rewatch for me, and if you can get past the conceit of the show (which is that a virus has left very few people alive) then you’re in for a dark, zany, hilarious romp through the post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Teke Cocina, Printmaking Instructional Support Manager

I’m listening to Dax Sheppard’s “Arm Chair Experts” podcast. Dax is in long term recovery and interviews experts from film, psychology, anthropology, etc. The conversation typically references Dax’s own recovery and the journey of personal growth.
