Mitski ’13 Releases New Album to Rave Reviews
Be the Cowboy, a new album by Mitski (studio composition), received rave reviews from Rolling Stone and more.
Studio Composition program alumna Mitski released her fifth album this week, entitled Be The Cowboy, called “daring” and “entirely under her control” by Rolling Stone.
In Rolling Stone, Caitlin Wolper writes, “In interviews, she’s made it clear that Be the Cowboy is about playing a role that she craves for her songs’ protagonists, a female icon of lawlessness and power that acts as a white, male cowboy would: without care or consequence, without regret.”

And Jon Pareles of the New York Times writes, “Indie rock was just a detour for Mitski. On “Be the Cowboy,” her fifth album, she embraces the possibilities of full-scale pop — not to formularize her emotions, but to give them an even larger canvas. It’s exactly the right choice.”
