Composition Teacher Premieres New Opera
Gregory Spears’ opera Fellow Travelers had its New York premiere at the Prototype Festival, and received great reviews.
Gregory Spears’ opera Fellow Travelers is based on the 2007 novel by Thomas Mallon. Set in the 1950’s in Washington, D.C., it “tells a tragic story of two young men…[who] have a love affair and become ensnared in the ‘lavender scare,’ the hysteria that purged gay employees from the federal government. “
The New York Times writes, “The surprising musical approaches Mr. Spears often takes to these scenes, and the characters, hooked me right through.”
