Choosing a Major

Many students enter college undecided about a major. Even students who declare a major upon entry, change that major at least once. This is not a concern for us, and it should not be for students or their parents.

Intellectual exploration is an important part of a college education, and we encourage our students to “think wide open.” That is the essence of a liberal arts education. Students are encouraged to declare a major by the end of their sophomore year. In order to graduate in eight semesters, only a few majors (primarily in the laboratory sciences) require a declaration of major in the freshman year. Students have many tools and resources available to help them make their decision.
