Assistant Professor of Art+Design
Rachel Owens, a Brooklyn-based contemporary multimedia artist, first joined the faculty in the School of Art+Design on a part-time basis in the spring of 2007, and then as a full-time visiting assistant professor in 2014–15. In 2015–16, she was appointed as a full-time assistant professor.
Born in Atlanta and raised in Missouri, Owens received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999.
Her work has been exhibited internationally and reviewed widely, including in the New York Times, the New Yorker, and Art in America. In 2013, she was the visual arts representative for TransCultural Express, a partnership between the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) and the Mikhail Prokhorov Fund intended to foster cross-cultural dialogue between American and Russian artists and audiences. In 2015, she had her fifth solo exhibition with Zieher Smith & Horton in New York City, with reviews in Modern Painter and Artinfo, and a cover and feature article in Glass. Her work was recently featured in the exhibition Artists at Work at the Cantor Center at Stanford University.
