Scott Mason ’05, ’07
A native of Danbury, CT and first-generation American born to Jamaican immigrants, Scott Mason graduated cum laude from the Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Music in 2005 and a Master of Music in 2007, both in Studio Composition. While at Purchase, he served as a Purchase Student Government Association (PSGA) representative, a member of the Organization of African Peoples in the Americas (OAPIA), and was a founding member of the Student Organization of Caribbean Ancestry (SOCA).
In Spring 2020, he completed the Teacher Preparation Program at the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, CT, obtaining Connecticut state certification to teach Elementary School along with endorsements in K-12 Music and Middle School Mathematics. He is now with the New Milford Public School District in New Milford, CT where he teaches middle school level music appreciation classes and conducts their middle school orchestra.
Scott first joined the Purchase College Alumni Association in 2018; he was elected to a third term in fall 2024. He currently serves on the Programming Committee tasked with developing programs to connect alumni with current Purchase students. As former co-chair of the Purchase Black Alumni Network, he helped create, now in its fifth year, an annual Black History Month summit to gather fellow members of the Purchase Black diaspora. In addition, he helped create an event featuring Black women alumni, and co-chaired the former Graduates of the Last Decade (G.O.L.D) committee that created a now annual summer gathering of Purchase alumni.
A major lesson Scott learned while at Purchase is guiding the next generation of young people in their academic and social growth and development is a form of service for greater society, in addition to a moral obligation. He is looking forward to continuing growing the alumni association and sharing his experiences with current students, and with alumni to help them on their post-Purchase journey.
