Ronnie Scharfman

Professor Emerita of French and Literature

Ronnie Scharfman, a scholar of postcolonial French and Francophone literatures, taught in the literature and the language and culture programs at Purchase College for 30 years and also contributed to gender studies program. She was honored in 2008 with the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Scharfman has published widely on Francophone writers, and her 1987 book on Césaire, Engagement and the Language of the Subject in the Poetry of Aimé Césaire, won a Gilbert Chinard Literary Prize. Also a poet and midrashist, she published her first poetry chapbook, In Poem & Prayer, in 2013.
