Justin Sherman ’14 Builds Youth Confidence, One Pitch at a Time
What began as a passion for baseball evolved into an independent training and coaching business that now serves thousands of young athletes across Westchester County and the tri-state area each year.
At JustinTime Baseball, Justin and his team focus on more than just batting averages and fielding drills. Founded in 2020, the program trains players ages three to thirteen in the fundamental skills of baseball and softball while instilling confidence, independence, and resilience. “Every practice is progress, every mistake is a lesson, and every game is a chance to grow,” Justin says. By meeting young players where they are, encouraging adaptability, and creating a positive, supportive environment, JustinTime Baseball is shaping athletes who carry lessons of teamwork, self-assurance, and perseverance both on and off the field.
Justin, a Media Communication major, credits his experience at Purchase College for setting him on this path. As a member of the baseball team, he began coaching youth camps and discovered his calling to work with younger players. He also found invaluable mentorship from longtime coach and professor Bill Guerrero, who sparked his entrepreneurial drive, and from current coach Adam Taraska, whose guidance further fueled his dedication to teaching the game. When lingering concussion issues cut his own playing career short, coaching became his new focus.
“Purchase College was a great experience for me,” Justin reflects. “Even at nineteen years old, I was absolutely glued to the idea of starting my own business and learning what it meant to be on my own. I made so many relationships at Purchase while building my educational background, and that helped me figure out my path. Purchase is a beautiful school—it’s extremely diverse, and it opened my mind to what’s possible.”
From his early coaching days on campus to running his own business, Justin has never lost sight of what drew him to the game in the first place: baseball as a vehicle for growth, joy, and connection. With JustinTime Baseball, he is paying that forward to the next generation.
