Azazel Jacobs ’94 visits to screen HIS THREE DAUGHTERS
Azazel Jacobs’ latest film, “His Three Daughters,” had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was purchased by Netflix in a world wide deal. The film–which he wrote, directed, edited, and was a producer on–stars Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen and Carrie Coon, alongside Jovan Adepo, Jay O. Sanders, Rudy Galvan, Jose Febus and Jasmine Bracey. It was released by Netflix in select theaters on September 6th, and globally September 20th, 2024, and quickly became one of the most acclaimed films of the year. It was included on numerous Best Of lists (in the number one spot in the Boston Globe, Washington Post and Rolling Stone) alongside being included in the top ten of independent films by the the National Board of Review. Out of its many wins and nominations, it received Best Screenplay at the NY Gothams, and The Robert Altman Award for its entire ensemble at The Film Independent Spirits. It recently became part of the permanent collection at The Museum Of Modern Art.
Previously, Azazel Jacobs’ “French Exit” had its world premiere as the closing night film for the New York Film Festival and its international premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. Released domestically by Sony Pictures Classics on April 2nd, 2021, and throughout the world by SONY International, it earned a Golden Globe nomination for Michelle Pfeiffer’s lead performance, which Variety proclaimed is “the role which she will be remembered for” and The New York Times stated simply as “sensational.”
Other films include “The Lovers” for A24, starring Debra Winger and Tracy Letts, for which his screenplay was nominated for a 2018 Independent Spirit Award, “Terri”(2011), starring John C. Reilly, which garnered both Gotham and Spirit Award nominations (Acting & Screenplay), and his award winning film “Momma’s Man” which premiered in Sundance 2008 and starred his own parents.
Son of filmmaker/artist Ken and Flo Jacobs, Azazel was raised in New York City surrounded by important and innovative artists. He received his Bachelor’s in film from SUNY Purchase and his Master’s from the American Film Institute. Other notable credits include directing the two seasons of the ground-breaking SKY/HBO show, “Doll & Em”, in addition to serving as a writer and producer, along with many episodes of Amazon’s Golden Globe winning series Mozart in the Jungle, for which he was a consulting producer in its final season.
