Spotted Lanternfly Trapping
The Environmental Studies Department is installing Spotted Lanternfly traps around campus this year.
Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) are an invasive species that recently arrived in New York. Most recent research seems to think that they don’t have major negative impacts on our native trees or plants – but they are going to cause major damage to vineyards and farms.
The Environmental Studies department has installed SLF traps all around campus to monitor the infestation and also try to reduce the population size. We don’t really have hope that we can eradicate this species but we can try to protect trees and areas of concern.
Something we are really worried about is the potential for bycatch, or catching other insects that we don’t want to. If you see a traps full of things other than SLF please contact Dr. Allyson Jackson and include the tree ID number.
