Composition Students Chosen for Prestigious Festival

Gregg Welcher (’19) and Kristin Kirk (’19 MM) participated in the Seal Bay Festival this summer

Composition students, Gregg Welcher, a senior, and Kristin Kirk, a second year masters student, were selected to participate in the prestigious Seal Bay Festival of American Chamber Music in Maine.

As part of this festival, they received commissions that received public premieres alongside professional composers as the festival toured around the state of Maine to nine venues, including galleries, museums, retirement homes, schools, and hospitals.

Gregg’s piece Poem is an exploration of the various musical textures that can be created by a single viola. Kristin’s piece sails made of ether came out of the vivid descriptions that a friend used for a Dungeons and Dragons campaign.
