The award-winning series Windows to the Wild explores what life for Thoreau was really like in Walden Woods.

Elise Lemire, Professor of Literature Elise Lemire is the author of Black Walden: Slavery and Its Aftermath in Concord, Massachusetts (2009).

In this episode of Windows to the Wild, she provides insight into the forgotten inhabitants of Walden Woods—beyond its best-known resident Henry David Thoreau—such as Brister Freeman, a former slave who finds freedom following the American Revolution, and other societal outcasts.
