Greenwich Audubon Center internship. By Michelle Cavalieri

December 14, 2020

Under the unique circumstances of the fall of 2020, I was fortunate enough to intern at the Greenwich Audubon Center. The versatility of the position allowed me to have many different experiences. During the warmer months I tended to the land by removing the invasive species Japanese porcelain berry. Though not enough to cure a forest, I made great headway in one area, freeing a few trees from the grips of the vine. The weather was also ideal for outdoor environmental education programs led by the center’s bird education specialist. I accompanied and assisted him on bird walks through the forest and meadows, pond exploration programs, and owl searching events at night. As the weather got colder, my options shifted and I spent a few days doing bird photography. The picture above was taken by me and features a white-breasted nuthatch. I am thankful to say I have learned so much about birds with the help and guidance of the bird education specialist. After taking photos, I was then given the opportunity to paint the birds which was a valuable way for me to notice each bird’s details and creatively engrain them in my mind. Lastly, I used my newly founded knowledge of birds to design coloring and activity sheets to help children explore, learn about, and engage with nature.
