Agritourism farm internship. By Zach Mitchell

December 14, 2020

My internship was as a Farm Hand at an agritourism farm named June Farms. Agritourism is a business approach that mixes tourism and agriculture, and June Farms achieved this by hosting events and with the 8 Airbnb’s on their property. My daily activities varied because of the wide variety of tasks required on the farm. Many tasks included preparing for guests, fixing fences, putting in posts, and caring for the animals. Initially, there were supposed to be baby pigs born about halfway through my internship, but the pigs that were pregnant were past their breeding age, and according to the vet the pigs absorbed their babies because of their advanced age. Towards the end of my internship, however a calf was born, who I got to meet briefly before the end of my internship. Some of my favorite parts of this internship included riding around on the ATVs and spending time with the animals. I got to spend a lot of time in the duck pond when I was helping plant trees and bushes to help make the ecosystem of the duck pond more functional and accurate. I really enjoyed seeing the uniqueness of agriculture mixed with tourism.
