NYPIRG Internship Fall 2019. by William Yates

December 13, 2019

During the Fall 2019 semester I had the experience of getting to intern with Purchase College NYPIRG. NYPIRG, which stands for New York Public Interest Research Group, is a student run, nonpartisan, not for profit, activist group that runs across seventeen SUNY, CUNY, and private schools in New York State. From September to the beginning of December I completed over 150 hours getting to work on a number of different issues such as: Voter Mobilization and Rights, Higher Education Funding, Hunger and Homelessness Outreach, Environmental Protection, and Consumer Protection. Throughout the semester I also attended weekly Internship Training/Workshops where I learned the ins and outs of grassroots organizing, public outreach and political/social activism. I even got to collaborate with Angie Kim in planning our own event of an environmental documentary screening on campus. Overall this Internship was a great experience, it felt really good to be hands on in the activism on my campus and in New York State, and to feel like the work I was doing is important and is making a change.
