Precollege: Journalism and Intro to Multi-Media Production

  • Precollege
  • Summer
  • Session-II

Explore how to tell meaningful stories about yourself and the world using essential journalism skills.

In this interactive program, you’ll take on creative projects like social media storytelling, zine creation, podcast production, and interviews, while learning the foundations of journalism across multiple platforms. No prior experience is required—just curiosity and a passion for storytelling.

Grades 9–12

Step into the world of today’s journalists and delve into the intricacies of producing impactful stories! Learn the basics of reporting, explore print, video, online, and social media formats, and uncover the story behind the headlines. You’ll pick a campus story, interview key people, and create your own piece to share at the program showcase. By the end, you’ll have begun developing your unique voice as a writer and leave with original work and hands-on experience in writing, communication, and visual storytelling—skills that stand out on college applications and in future careers.

Typical Day

Mornings

9:00am - 12:00pm

Each day begins with an introduction to production practices and clear understanding of production roles. Students will use the mornings to build sets, set dress, learn how to operate cameras, research a given topic, and develop interview questions and strategies.

12:00pm - 1pm

Lunch

Weather permitting, students have the opportunity to enjoy lunch outdoors with their Teaching Assistants, soaking in the beauty of the Purchase College campus, connecting with fellow students, and recharging their energy before heading into afternoon classes and activities.

Afternoons

1:00pm - 3:30pm

Lights, camera, action! Students will use the afternoons to produce their TV News show, in addition to creating “commercials” in between segments. Students are introduced to the various control room jobs necessary to broadcast a TV interview such as the director, producer, remote camera operator, audio board, and teleprompter operator. Reporters practice their on-camera skills by interviewing each other and reading their scripts ‘live’ as their 30 second video pieces are shown.

Student Showcase

On the final day, students will showcase a sample of their  collaborative work, celebrating their efforts and newfound knowledge with family, friends and peers.
