Spring 2026 Interior Design Courses

Noncredit
Explore the design process from concept to the finished commercial or residential project. Review spatial layout and significance, materials and finishes, and furniture. Learn ways to solve design problems and analyze design styles and needs. Students present their final projects, complete with rendered drawings and presentation boards.

Understand the development of archetypal furniture forms and private interiors, which were increasingly based on living functions. Gain insight into Western civilization’s fascination with ancient Greece and Rome, culminating in neoclassicism as the dominant mode in Europe and America by the 1780s.

Investigate interior decoration from 1800 to modern times as numerous changes take place, based on evolving social, industrial, political, and technological reform. Learn how the modern movement responded to these changes, creating a full-fledged interior design industry by 1950. Understand why today’s designers acknowledge a continuing social fascination with period styles, modern innovations, and postmodern practices.

Explore the history of shelter outside the Western mainstream, including residences found in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Learn how to establish your own design firm; create a portfolio; read a client’s taste, personality, and opinion; charge for services; develop a company logo; and address routine issues associated with the design profession. Explore marketing tools that enable you to reach prospective clients. Develop a business plan to capture your goals and make plans to maximize profits.
Note: The last session is held in the New York Design Center; participants are responsible for their transportation to and from the Center.

Develop lighting plans and specifications and resolve specific residential lighting challenges for bath, kitchens, home offices, and multistory foyers. Work in small groups to solve the various lighting issues.

Earn your certificate in as few as four semesters.

Students may take courses individually without commitment to the entire program. Students who successfully complete the required courses and elective course hours are awarded a certificate from the School of Liberal Studies & Continuing Education, reflecting 25 continuing education units (CEUs).

Note: Certificate programs must be completed within four years unless approved by the director of continuing education. Students who began their coursework before the 2015–16 academic year should refer to previous certificate requirements.
