Tom is best known for his iconic photograph of three firefighters raising the American flag at Ground Zero on Sept. 11, 2001—an image that became a symbol of resilience and was later featured on a U.S. postage stamp. Franklin was a finalist for the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the Sept. 11 attacks, and his work was recognized by LIFE magazine as one of the “100 Photographs That Changed the World.” His photographs and visual reporting have appeared in major publications and exhibitions, and his work is held in the permanent collections of institutions including the Library of Congress and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
In addition to his photography, Franklin has produced award-winning documentary films focused on social justice and public-interest issues. His documentary work has explored topics including the opioid epidemic in New Jersey, toxic dumping in Native American communities, and immigration and forced migration.
At the Alumni Showcase, Tom will present a cross-section of photographs from across his career.
