I found anthropology at Purchase when I took an Intro to Ethnomusicology class with Professor Plourde. I was fascinated with the different topics we covered and after that class I became an anthro major and that really gave me a sense of direction. I was able to continue taking really cool classes in the Anthropology department, like Sound & Listening with Professor Plourde and Psychedelic Life Worlds with Professor Falcon. I loved being able to take classes outside of the Anthro department as well. The flexibility of the major was probably the most important aspect for me.
Soon after graduating from Purchase, I learned about a NYS program that funds healthcare degrees including Master of Social Work. The 1199 CPT program partners with NYU and I applied very late in the year (summer) and was accepted to the program a month later. I just started classes at NYU and will graduate in Spring of 2027, which is a requirement for the funding. My biggest interests are helping people with anxiety disorders such as OCD and ROCD (relationship OCD). For my grad school internship I hope to be able to work at a clinic that works with people experiencing OCD and/or one that focuses on self-compassion and mindfulness. After my three years working post graduation, I see myself working at organizations that provide therapy to people of all ages and specialize in CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) as well as ERP (exposure response prevention) and then ultimately I would like to open a private practice.
I am very excited and curious and inspired right now in the social work program. My anthropology degree demanded a lot of thinking from different perspectives and challenging already existing ideologies, and these are skills I know will help me with my next chapter in life in social work.
