Joy-Marie Thompson ’18

Joy-Marie Thompson is a performing artist, writer, and educator from Pittsburgh, PA.

Thompson had their Metropolitan Opera debut in May 2024 as a dancer in El Niño, a retelling of the Nativity by eminent American composer John Adams.

Other recent work includes an appearance in the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” video by artist Chloe Flower.

Under the artistic director and choreographer Stefanie Batten Bland, Thompson is a teaching artist for CONCRETE, a summer intensive exploring dance in the context of immersive theater.


Thompson has professionally performed work by Shamel Pitts, STAYCEE PEARL dance project & Soy Sos, Sidra Bell and Maxine Doyle.

Thompson was a resident at The McKittrick Hotel in Sleep No More (NYC) and is currently working with Baye and Asa under the direction of Amadi Washington and Sam Pratt.

As a movement director and collaborator, they have presented work at: August Wilson Center, American Dance Guild, the Women in Dance Conference, Festival PRISMA, Derida Stage, PearlArts Studios, Arts on Site, and many film festivals including the Dance Film Association’s #mydancefilm at Lincoln Center.

As an educator, Thompson teaches various forms of movement improvisation as a guest lecturer at Purchase College, SUNY, Montclair State University, and Gibney Dance Education teaching improvisation and pilates.

Thompson’s writing has been published by Imagining: A Gibney Journal and Thinking Dance.

They currently live in Queens, NY.
