Devon Spencer ’14

I currently live in Seattle, Washington. I received my master’s degree in Social Work at the University of Washington in 2017 with a concentration in Children, Youth, and Families. I currently work at a mood and anxiety clinic with a focus on providing individual, group, and family therapy. In addition to providing talk therapy, I am a community educator with a background in sexual health and creating and creating LGBTQ+ affirming spaces. Since graduate school, I have also enjoyed working with Planned Parenthood and GLSEN.
While at Purchase, my coursework and Senior Project were centered on topics I am most passionate about, such as gender, art, and urban space. In my Senior Project, “Identity (In) Visibility: Community, Spaces, and Material,” I questioned the nuances of queer and radical safe space in commercial settings. I am so happy that I studied Anthropology because it is uniquely interdisciplinary and it allowed me to see current events, art, language, and history through a different lens. My background in Anthropology has been incredibly beneficial for the field of social work because I strive for a deeper understanding and communication across boundaries of race, gender, religion, and socioeconomic status.
