Professor of Anthropology

Director of Natural and Social Sciences

Rudolf Gaudio is a Professor of anthropology and a contributing faculty member in the media studies program and the interdisciplinary programs in gender studies and global black studies. His research addresses questions of language, citizenship, and space in relation to gender, sexuality, nation, and race. His book, Allah Made Us: Sexual Outlaws in an Islamic African City (Wiley, 2009), is an ethnography of ‘yan daudu, men who are said to talk and “like women” in the Muslim, Hausa-speaking region of northern Nigeria. While continuing to write about gender and sexuality, he is also pursuing research on language, race, and (trans)nationalism in Abuja, Nigeria’s modernist capital.
