2026 BioBlitz Results
The 2026 SUNY Purchase BioBlitz is complete and we have learned so much about our campus!
The 4th Annual SUNY Purchase BioBlitz happened Sept 10-12, 2026. This year, 60 different people went out to record biodiversity on our 500 acre campus as part of the 4th Annual SUNY Purchase BioBlitz. Together we reported 3015 different observations of biodiversity!
Together, we recorded 533 species on iNaturalist, an app that allows us to catalog anything we can get photos of. These photos are now checked by professional naturalists to confirm that we saw what we thought we saw. Once two independent observers agree on the identification, it becomes research-grade and is used by the Environmental Studies department to help guide land stewardship and conservation on campus. We also had a team, lead by Professor Emeritus Lee Schlesinger that worked to catalog bird species (which can be tricky to get photos of). This group recorded a total of 45 species of birds using our campus and logged their observations on the app eBird. Explore all of the bird observations on this eBird page.
In total, we recorded the following different species in just a 3 day period:
- 281 plant species
- 114 insect species
- 68 fungi species
- 45 bird species
- 15 arachnid species
- 11 mammal species
- 4 amphibian species
