Film by Andrew Rodriguez ’19 Backed by Colectivo Incubator
El Tiguere (The Tiger) received the green light from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s fellowship and filmmaking incubator, Colectivo, paving the way for its premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City in June.
In the face of food insecurity and a harsh legal system in the Bronx, a Dominican immigrant operates his mobile food garden under the radar, determined to rebuild his life and repair his relationship with his estranged son.
Andrew J. Rodriguez, an Afro-Caribbean filmmaker dedicated to centering the voices of the working-class through character-driven stories, wrote and directed El Tiguere.
Created in partnership with the Miranda Family Fund and the Hispanic Federation, Colectivo supports emerging Latino filmmakers throughout the creative process—from story development to distribution—providing funding, mentorship, and important screening opportunities.
With guidance and training from Lin-Manuel Miranda, his father, author and community activist Luis A. Miranda Jr., their extended creative network, and Tribeca Studios, El Tiguere was one of three original short-scripted films selected by Colectivo to showcase Latinx stories and talent both in front of and behind the camera.
Rodriguez has received several grants, awards, screenings, and recognitions for his work as a writer, director, and filmmaker.
“Andrew is a great example of a student who came to Purchase and discovered his voice,”
says John G. Young, Visiting Assistant Professor of Film and Chair, Film Production Minor.
“His film work here was honest, fearless, and personal. It’s no surprise that others have recognized his unique perspective, talent, and humanity.”
