Veteran Journalist Lee Kahrs ’88 Earns Fellowship

She’ll spend time mentoring young journalists in Provincetown, MA.

The Provincetown Independent named Lee Kahrs ’88 one of two recipients of a new journalism fellowship program. The Winter Fellowship in Journalism Leadership allows her to gain experience in mentoring young journalists.

Kahrs is a veteran reporter and essayist who’s spent her career wearing many hats in small-town newspapers in Vermont. She’s been responsible for all aspects of newspaper production, including reporting, photography, layout, editing, and even delivering the paper.

After an 11-year run at The Reporter in Brandon, VT ended in 2018, the town honored her tireless effort. The town’s selectboard unanimously approved a proclamation in Kahrs’ honor, announcing Aug. 15, 2018, as “Lee J. Kahrs Day in Brandon, Vermont.”

The Provincetown Fellowship also allows Kahrs to fulfill her lifelong dream of living and working in Provincetown, MA, a place she first visited just after graduation from Purchase. She also went on to earn an MFA in creative nonfiction from the University of Southern Maine’s Stonecoast program.
