NYPIRG “Straphangers” intern. by Eamonn Doherty

May 11, 2026

In Spring 2026, I worked with the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) on their “Straphangers” campaign, which advocates for improved public transportation services. For NYPIRG’s Higher Education Action Day, we went up to Albany to voice our concerns to local assemblymen about the planned elimination of Bee-Line service to Purchase College as outlined in the 2023 Westchester Bee-Line system redesign plan. We also ran a petition campaign over the semester in support of retaining Route 12’s service and were able to get nearly 700 signatures, which we presented to the county Board of Legislators.

Further, I worked with my fellow interns in NYPIRG’s other campaigns for Public Health, Environmental Justice, Food Insecurity, and more. It was nice to see the impact that public advocacy can have. I enjoyed interacting with different interest groups to understand their positions on the problems we were facing.
