This year I learned how interconnected all the different facets of sustainability truly are. My work as a Zero Waste intern has allowed me to explore different ways to be sustainable. In doing food recovery I met so many people on campus who were excited about the work that we were doing since it helped them eat a little more on campus. In composting, I saw the change in D- Hall from people simply throwing their things in the trash, to being mindful of the composting plan. And of course, working in the freestore seeing it become more and more of a space students rely on.

My focus this year was on cleaning and maintaining the free store while also incorporating my own ideas for the future of the store. In simple terms, I organized the donations that were received and came up with ways to make the free store a more local place for students. I had the idea of placing the food recovery fridge in the free store for easier access for students. Since the commuter lounge closes on weekends students aren’t able to go in and get the food versus the upstairs of D-Hall which is open 24/7. I also started on a plan of making the free store a more central hub for sustainability so we could reach more students and educate them since that is a major goal.

Overall I enjoy the different parts that I got to dabble in and has made me look more into sustainability as a career option in my future. Actually doing the work and seeing how it all affects each other has opened my eyes to the bigger picture instead of my one focus.
